Motorcycle, Dirt Bike, Scooter Service
Hello customers. Are you in search of an ATV mechanic? Then look no further than Smeltz’s Speed Shop! All ATVs and Side x Sides newer than 10 years have a FLAT $200 diagnostic fee which is due at time of either drop off or pick up. Any ATV that is 10+ years or older have a diagnostic fee of $175 a cylinder. An example of how these fees would apply is as follows:
A 2021 Can-Am Outlander would be $200. (A ATV that is newer than 10 years)
A 1985 Honda ATC 250R, the diagnostic fee would be $175. (Single cylinder ATV)
A 2004 Kawaski Bayao would be $350. (Dual cylinder ATV)
Modern ATVs have a lot of diagnostics and A LOT of electrical on them. The $200 helps me help you with gaining access to factory wiring diagrams, as well as letting me troubleshoot any possible electrical or mechanical problems.
Ah vintage ATVs. I have had now a couple vintage ATVs come through the shop. The diagnostic fee per cylinder will get you the following tests:
Compression test - No amount of carburetor rebuilding, or Italian tune ups will resuscitate a ATV with low compression
Leak down test - Good compression is nothing if your engine is burning oil. A leak down test will ensure the engine isn’t burning excessive oil and does not have internal engine damage
Borescope inspection - This is to put eyes in your cylinder to do a final verification to make sure no excessive wear is in the cylinder, the valves look acceptable, and the piston looks usable as well.
All of these test take time, knowledge, and specialized tools. This is why we have a diagnostic fee at the Speed Shop. We want to be fair to our employees by compensating them but also want to be fair to our customers. We hate nothing more than to see customers try to resuscitate a ATV that simply cannot be saved.
One final note, WE DO NOT and WILL NOT use customer supplied parts. If you are having a ATV fixed, we will be charging for parts accordingly.
Please note, we are a DATA DRIVEN DIAGNOSTIC SHOPS. We do not just willy nilly throw parts at our problems here. I have had in the past had to order special adapters to diagnose customer quads. If this is the case, I will tell you before any parts are ordered as well as the potential lead times. THIS IS NOT ME LOOKING FOR AN EXCUSE TO NOT FIX YOUR MACHINE. Quads are more complex than bikes, and due to this at times I might not have 100% of the diagnostic tools in house. However, I will certainly get them for a customer vehicle.
